In the previous installment, we covered key considerations for overseas projects. This time, we will examine risk management for IT engineers participating in overseas projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This time, I will introduce cultures and customs unique to overseas locations. In Japan, incidents of crowds turning into mobs have not occurred in several decades, but overseas, this happens occasionally even in developed countries like the United States. Certain regions have experienced periods of civil unrest or large-scale public demonstrations, making it important to monitor local conditions before and during travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was a time when large-scale demonstrations were held daily throughout Brazil due to public transportation fare increases. Right near the hotel where we were staying, riots continued until morning, with mobs smashing bank windows and clashing with security forces. At that time, we had dinner at a nearby restaurant but felt our safety was at risk and could not return to our hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recently, with the ability to use social media like Facebook on smartphones, it has become possible to avoid risks through advance information sharing. The best approach is to connect with local expats via social media to obtain information. And when such disturbances occur, one effective precaution may be to remain in a secure location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond such disturbances, theft prevention measures are important. For example, for men, it is common knowledge not to put wallets in back pockets. In many countries and regions, it is recommended to carry backpacks in front rather than on your back when on trains. Regular bags should also be held in front of you. If there are blind spots, you may fall victim to pickpockets who cut your bag with a box cutter and steal what’s inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Avoid leaving valuables in your hotel room when going out. Locks can be broken and items stolen. Of course, avoid dangerous areas. You may encounter robbery. While not everywhere overseas is dangerous, if you assume it’s the same as Japan, you could encounter serious difficulties, so please stay vigilant and maintain your guard at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risks also exist with food. It goes without saying that untreated water and raw foods are dangerous, but even cooked dishes can cause food poisoning due to unsanitary preparation. It’s best to get information from local expats about this as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Going to a hospital overseas requires extremely high language ability (which means having a local person accompany you and causing them inconvenience), and insurance-related matters also become a source of concern. It is important to manage yourself so that you can avoid going to the hospital as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Caution is also needed when going to implement systems at local factories. Here’s a story from when I went to a factory in Thailand. I thought I could just have lunch at the factory cafeteria, but the food was difficult for some Japanese visitors to eat, and I ended up skipping lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is information that even ‘Chikyu no Arukikata’ doesn’t include, so you need to gather information by asking local Japanese expats in advance or, more recently, by researching on the web and social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
